I have just bought a toyota celica gts 85 and the guy did tell me that it needed a new airflow meter would this keep the car from starting? I mean it cranks but it won't stay started

He's probably right. The voltage signal for all the other sensors go right through the air flow meter.
Try unplugging it and see if it will stay running. It will run like crap of course.
