Its about a lady who sells string puppets and her husband works at a factory. I only remember two scenes. One when the husband buys the kids paint to paint the puppets and the woman see them and says they look ugly. The other scene is toward the end when one of the kids gets hit by a train? Car? And they at the hospital and the dr says something about they can't go further because she has no money and at that moment the woman starts going crazy and pulls money out of her coat and yells "you want money, I have money over and over again. I vaguely remember something about strikes and police.

Sounds sort of like The Doll Maker with Jane Fonda. I think she makes dolls, and one of the children is hit by a train. I don't remember a scene with a hospital or anything about the husband though. The train scene really stands out in my mind. I'ts set in the hills of Kentucky or something like that.
