doorbell won't ring winchester chime unless button is held continuously.
I replaced the button unit outside when the old one stopped working. But no the Winchester chime won't continue unless the button is continuously pressed. One press = one sound then it stops.?

Sounds like the type button you selected is not the correct one.

I have encountered the same problem recently. What is the proper kind of button to install as a replacement?

For a door chime, I connected a small capacitor between the two two terlmlinals on the push button and that resolved the problem.
