Enrolled Agent: I am employed in a local government and prepare tax returns on the side. With the new requirements for preparers coming next year I am contemplating taking the SEE to become an Enrolled Agent. I read that some government employees are not eligible. How do I find out if my government job is a problem to being an Enrolled Agent?

It is NOt a problem unless your employer has a problem with it.

The FEDERAL government does NOT allow their employees to become Enrolled Agents because the EA represents their clients against the interest of the federal government. That involves a direct conflict of interest.

Ask your employer if they have a problem with you becoming an Enrolled Agent. If they say it's okay, you're good!
