J1 visa holder filling 1040NR-itemize deductions
    Hi,
My question is about maximasing itemize deductions? According to the regulations for non-residents I can use onlypersonla exemtion for amount of 3300 USD and cannot use standart deducts, however I can use Itemize deductions. I would like to increase the amount of Itemise deduction in order to receive higher return amount on the 1040NR. A friend told me about using the flight ticket in moving expenses> Is it doable to usi it? What else I can use to maximise the itemise deductions? I have wrked in Massachusets. Is it the same in the State income tax return?

If you have NOT being reimbursed for the ticket from your home country to the U.S. then, yes, that is a valid moving expense.

However, moving expenses is reported on Form 3903 and is deducted as an adjustment to income, NOT as an itemized expense.

I am not sure if Massachusetts will allow you to deduct your moving expenses. I think so, but I cannot check as I do not have eccess to my files where I am presently located.

You could donate to charity, but it is too late for 2006. The Massachusetts state income tax that has been withheld from your salary will also be a sizable itemized deduction.

What other itemise deductions I can use to minimise the taxable income? I used already program cost fee and airfare fee + the personal exemtion of 3300$ for 2006. I am single on a J1 visa for 4 months for the first time in USA.

That's about it for deductions for 2006.

    Sorry!
