I am in the process of replacing my toilet and am having some problems as the "parts" do not seem to be like the DIY videos.

I live in a 4 unit condo on the top floor. Building was built in late 70's early 80's. When I removed the old toilet and the old wax, I noticed the flange was broken. Also the toilet pipe coming out of the floor looks pretty mangled at the top (assuming it's lead). I can't tell if the lip of the pipe was suppose to be straight up or "folded down" towards the flange. Question #1 How do I replace the flange? Do I hammer the lip in an upward direction and slide flange off? Then replace flange and hammer lead back down towards flange?? Question # 2. The new toilet doesn't seem to be as deepset around the pipe hole and therefore is not going to sit flust on the floor... unless of course I continue to hammer down lead lip of the pipe.

Please help! Obviously I don't know what I'm doing.

Hi Chris,

If you have lead then your best bet will be to try to fold the lead back down or if the old flange is broken you could continue to pry the lead up so you can remove the old flange and install a new flange ring... here, you would install the new ring and then peen the lead over the new flange.

Use a deep wax ring with a horn and long/tall johnnie bolts (toilet bolts) when installing the new toilet and you should be all set... as long as the lead doesn't break when you bend it over the new closet ring... ;)
