    To Al and N?

What do you mean by that?

I'll bet you are looking for the formula for ALUMINUM NITRIDE.
How many electrons does Al want to gain or lose? What will be the charge on the resulting ion?
How many electrons does N want to gain or lose? What will be the charge on the resultilng ion?
Criss / cross your charges and you have the empirical formula.

Well they ask me like this:Write the Empirical formula for this Ion element Al and N,
    Sr and I.

Do you know the formulae of the compounds of Al and N, and Sr and I?

From what I recall, I was taught directly the (molecular) formula of compounds then empirical formula came later.

Do you know the valency of Al and N?
The valency of Sr and I?

From there, can you write down the formula of aluminium nitride and strontium iodide?
