I think I may have a mold problem. My friend actually had an appliance repairman remove hers and she said it was caked. Once she cleaned it off the repairman told her that it should last at least five more years. I want to remove mine but not have to hire someone to take it out. Anyone know how? Thanks for any help.

I assume this is a top load washer? If so it is not that difficult, but you will need to purchase a spanner wrench. You will use this to remove the spanner nut, a reverse thread. Do not be afraid to use a hammer, it is tight. Also pulling the basket is not an easy task. A lot of people use too much detergent and it builds up. You will probably need help pulling it.
