I was speaking to a priest before a wedding and he told me that the groom shouldn't drink before the vows because this will nullify the marriage if it goes to court. My question: Can I nullify my marriage after going through a lengthy divorce which is still going on Married 2 years w/ child, Divorce in Limbo the past 7 years. I'm in NYS.

If it can get nullified, does it negate everything after that, ie: divorce process, agreements, etc.

No, it seems you had plenty enough time to bring this up. Staying married and having children with her shows you accepted the marriage. It would have been different had you gone within the first few days and claimed it.

No, that is why you are normally required to get your marriage license prior to your wedding. That fact shows you were planning to get married. Plus what type of wedding, was it planned for weeks ahead?

And of course even if you did, it can actually complicate division of property,

And you will still have to fight out child custody and child support.

The only reason a divorce can be in limbo for 7 years is that someone just is not trying, or it is a hard fight and no one will agree with terms.

So why it is taking so long to get a court to rule

I suspect the priest may have been talking about church law and not civil law. But in either case, the time to claim that is gone.

That's what I'm thinking.

Add priests to the list of those professionals whose legal advice should be taken with a grain of salt.
