Since there's no cure for the common cold anyway, you do what everyone does who doesn't like to take OTC or prescription drugs: lots of fluids, dress warmly especially all around your torso, fresh onions, garlic, and ginger (we have those almost every dinner in the winter and they have worked for years), wash hands, get enough rest, get humidity. Your ear might hurt because your eustacian tube is also clogged with mucus or just because of post nasal clog/drip and sinus pressure. Gargle warm salt water as much as every 30 minutes or as often as you can. Brush your tongue when brushing teeth.
Use Vicks in boiling hot water and inhale the steam. You can use a tea pot that you don't care about any more or use an open pan for this. I keep a teapot in the house just for this purpose. That is good to break up your chest congestion and stuffy nose. You can also put the Vicks on your chest or under your nose at night to sleep.
