I came from vietnam and adopted when I was 6 with the couple who are americans. I got a serious problem with it when I knew I can't apply for a passport for crossing other countries. My dad just told me about it.He missed some important papers when they adopt me. Tell how to solve this problem or how to know my status?

If you have legal adoption papers, filed through the courts, then you are an American citizen. You shouldn't NEED a green card--your adoption gave you citizenship.

Due to the black market nature of the adoption, however, I would consult with an attorney just to verify that everything regarding the adoption was filed correctly. If it wasn't, then the attorney can help you fix the situation. After 38 years, I would think that it should just be a matter of paperwork to fix any lingering problems.

However, I am not an attorney--I'm actually a birthmother who has been involved in a lot of aspects of the adoption community for a while now. I can't imagine that it would be that difficult to get all the paperwork you need, but you should consult with an attorney to be sure. And I really suggest going to an attorney that specializes in adoption law.
