You know him best. I have asked guys out by saying something like "I need a date for the formal, would you be a lifesaver and come with me?" Even if they said no, none of them were ever annoyed that I asked.

Don't wait, ask him, you really do not have anything to lose, but something to gain. The opportunity cost is definitely on your side this time so take a chance, be fun about it, and ask him in a create way. If he says no, maybe you can try again next year, if he says yes, then have fun!

You don't have anything to lose. Just a date to gain. Ask him to the dance. You don't know unless you ask!
Even if he does say no at least he will notice you and spend some time thinking and researching you through friends and such. Don't ever wait on life's moments like this.
