My 1990 Honda civic lx will not move in reverse, it is an automatic transmission. The shifter moves to the reverse position fine but the transmission doesn't engage. (if I shift from neutral to reverse it sounds exactly the same). About two weeks ago there would be a loaned clunk whenever I shifted from drive to reverse but this did not happen when shifting from Neutral to reverse. I was told by a friend who knows a lot about hondas that it could be the transmission mounts. But now the car won't move when shifted to reverse. All of the other gears work fine. (2, D3, D4, neutral) and there is no loud noise when shifting into any of those other gears. (the transmission engages fine) but when I shift to reverse the lever shifts smoothly but the transmission seems to do absolutely nothing!

Take this issue to a transmission shop for diagnosis while you can still drive it.

Hey, I'm having the same problem. Did you ever figure it out? I'd love some insight seeing as I'm a poor college student and a transmission shop is way out of my price range.
