Anyone know what would cause loss of childhood memory?
I can't remember much of my life before 3rd grade. I have one memory when I was three years old and that is only of the house I lived in. I remember what it looked like on the inside and that is all, I remember nothing else of that age. Then my school days I don't remember Kindergarten at all... nothing or anything outside of school. 1st grade I remember parts of my teacher, nothing else. 2nd grade I sort of remember my teacher, but nothing else. 3rd grade is sketchy at the first part, but that is when I start to remember things. Like some of the kids who were in my class, friends I had, some things I did in class, but still don't remember much else. I don't remember anything outside of class, playing or going anywhere... nothing in those years.

I do not have a reason for this at all... I read others had trauma in there lives that may have played a part in their loss of memory, but as far as I know I did not. I know when I was older I was mentally and physically abused, but don't know about my younger days because I can't remember. I don't remember it at all... has anyone else experienced this??

I do believe that stress, anxiety and abuse can all be factors on why there are memory problems. Blocked memory. Is a way of protecting us, but it can also be holding us back to the future. Some people remember a lot when they are young and some people do not. Some have good short term memory but not long term memory could be that simple.

I agree with Jesushelper in that it could be that simple.

Why don't babies remember? Because the brain is not fully developed to hold memories & the dependence may be too great .
Now, I don't remember (a steady memory) much before 8 or 9. What I do remember had "emotional overtones" attached to the memory. Example: My mother & I dressed with identical outfits & we had to walk by train tracks to get to my kindergarten. So, maybe nothing with emotion happened to you before you were in 3rd grade-so it just didn't stick.
Now, my cousin could remember stuff at 3 or 4 yrs. Old. But it's for sure he had plenty of emotion going on with the things he recalls.
    Hope that helps.

    Yes Pumpkin,

That is an excellent answer as well. Things associated with lots of emotion would be remembered more. I am 30 and I have memories of when I was in my crib.
