If you want free and legal music, check out artists' websites. Some of them offer music for free. There's also free legal sites like archive.org which contains live recordings and such. Mininova now contains completely legal stuff. A lot of unknown artists will use these sites to promote themselves.

But if you don't find the music you want on places like that, then you will have to go without, or risk legal retribution.
