My ex accused me of doing something I did not do. When I tried to prove to him it wasn't me, he said "I don't care that much, you don't have to go through all this effort to prove some point to me". I then said that I don't want him to hate me for something I didn't do. He said "I don't hate you, I just don't care anymore. There has been too much of a coincidence for me to forget about it and have no doubt left, and you and I just have to live with that. I'm sorry if this isn't your fault but it just doesn't matter to me anymore"
What does that mean? Because if someone tries to prove their innocence to me, and I say I don't care, that usually means I'm not mad anymore, or I don't hold it against them, or I don't think anything bad of them anymore (aka the incident doesn't matter). But it could also mean that he does think badly of me because of the incident, and he doesn't care whether I really did it or not, he is just going to think I did. And it doesn't matter whether that is right or not.
