I have a 6 1/2 cat and a 10 month kitten. My cat hisses whenever he sees the kitten. I don't see the cat very often. He doesn't like it at home so he hangs around the neighbourhood instead. I manage to get him home everyday for some food but the kitten always walks along. My cat then hisses and attacks my kitten. What can I do to get my cat to like the kitten?

There is not much you can do. It takes time. I got a new kitten when my older cat was about 1 1/2 years old. She hissed at the poor thing and I worried that she would hurt it, but eventually they got along and now they are friends most of the time. It took a couple of years before they were happy with each other.

It is especially true if they are both female or both male cats as the older cat is territorial and the new cat is invading his/her territory.

Try to spend some time with the older cat as well as the younger one petting it and showing it love so it doesn't feel left out.
