Battery dash light barely illuminated - 2003 chevy
The battery indicator on the dash mounted display is barely lit, indicating a ground?? There are also times when the charging system does not appear to be operating, voltage system decays while engine is operating. Voltage will not increase above 14 volts and slowly decays over time (45 minutes while driving) to 12 volts. The next day charging system appears okay, i.e. voltage increases above 14V when engine rpm increases. Appears to be an intermittent problem... AARRGGHH. Any ideas?

It sounds like the voltage regulator/brush holder assembly is worn out. These links may help:

The later link, even though it's for a Ford 4G alternator, will show you how to rebuild your alternator for $20. It's a fun project. After rebuilding or replacing the alternator, remove and fully charge the battery. Alternators are only to maintain the charge in a battery--they are not meant to be chargers. That's how regulators burn out.

For a "quick fix," disconnect negative battery cable, remove rear cover, remove/install a new regulator/brush holder (may require Torx T20 screwdriver tip), and replace cover.
