It could be hip displacement. How hard of a hit did your dog take?

Thanks for getting back to me. It wasn't too hard a hit. I initially thought I had just scared him but only later when I noticed he was in some pain when he try to sit down. He was sitting directly behind the door. Do we try to make him comfortable till morn and take him to vet or is there anything we can do for him

For now keep him comfortable and don't move him too much, try locking him in a kennel so he doesn't hurt it worse.

Sure you can go with that for now and watch for any changes. What you have to remember is that doors have very sharp edges and something not so hard to you can be rather extreme if if caught them in the wrong place. It could cause even a break to occur. But if they can walk then it was most likely an issue of displacement so talk to your vet as soon as you can and monitor things at this time.

If it is a case of hip displacement, is that a serious injury for a fit 2 year old pug and should he recover fully?

Yes, it could be serious or it could be nothing.
Just keep him confined to a crate (if you have one) and ONLY let him out for toilet breaks, carry him out there if you can.
You need to really limit his movement so that if it is something serious you don't make it worse... and if it is nothing more than a pulled muscle, confinement is the best course of action as well until you can get to the vet.

Took my little pug to vets this morn. He is recovering well and had only a bit of bruising the vet said. He is on a course of anti inflamitorys for a few days to help him out but he is already running up and down the stairs again and wanting to play! Thanks for all your advise. It was very reassuring.
