We just moved into a home that was built in the early 70s, so I was told. One of that bathrooms only have a tub! No shower head or anything like that. I went to Home Depot bought a diverter, come to find out the old one wouldn't come off. From what my father in law said there is no way it's coming off unless we tare down the wall. It doesn't have a hole underneath for it to screw off and it will not budge when we tried twisting it off. It could be cause we only used our hands to try and screw it off. So I tried to look for a shower hose with a rubber piece to go over the spout that would have a hand held shower head. I can't find one long enough! WHAT DO I NEED TO DO? Should I try twisting it off again? I'm scared it my strip or break, please help...

Why did you buy a diverter when you have no shower, nothing to diverter to? Did you mean a spout with a pull up diverter? Also not for your shower. Spouts are attached by either push on to a copper pipe with a small set screw or threaded on a pipe


Please do not type in the comments box, use the ANSWER THIS QUESTION box for all replied. Does you spout look like this or does it not have the pull up knob? Tub spouts come in two flavors.

1) A metal spout that screws on, (see image) **AND**
2) A slip on spout,(see image).

Look under the spout next to the wall line and if you see a square hole then you have a compression type slip on spout. If no square hole then you have a screw in type. To remove a compression type spout you take a allen head wrench in the correct size and unscrew to allen head screw and pull the spout out. To remove a screw in type just put a wrench on it and screw it out counterclockwise.

My earlier post seems to have disappear but , no matter, pretty much the same as Tom's pic. If you have the pull up knob on top of your spout that's the diverter. You do not have a shwer, right, you do not need a diverter style spout. You can't just add a diverter type spout to your plumbing. You need a different mixing valve with a line running up inside the wall. I have installed several Moen mixing valves that come out of the box both ways, shower or no shower

I checked there is no screw underneath. It has to be a slip on spout. We tried screwing it off and I'm telling you the thing will not budge! Its on there pretty good! :( and this is what I bought if I'm confusing you http://www.faucetdirect.com/image It has an outlet so I can attach a hand help. I didn't mean the diverter. I was told from home depot that that's what I needed. They handed me the spout with the diverter and outlet. What should I do if I can't get it off?

If the boys at HD gave something like this Danco 88703 Bathtub Spout with Diverter, Universal Tub Spout then they are wrong, not the first time. You need one that looks like this http://images.lowes.com/product/conv...55887026lg.jpg . Here are the directions to remove a slip on Moen, the jole can be very small. How to Take a Moen Tub Spout Off | eHow.com If no hole, positive no hole, it has to be threaded on, get a large pair of channel lock and twist it off. Stand in the tub and twist counterclockwise. Also the link you gave in the last post is definitely NOT WHAT YOU NEED

Did you ever get the old spout ofIs this what you're seeking? (see image) This is a diverter spout with a side outlet for a hand held shower.

I apologize, that is the spout you should get. I missed that you wanted to add a HAND HELD shower. That Delta will do it.

Nope haven't got it off yet. I need to get a wrench this weekend. My finance and father in law are worried it might mess the pipe up or the wall. I'm just going to get a wrench and do it myself. Make sure, 100% that all of you look under the spout for a small hole. No hole then it is threaed on and don't worry about scratching it since you are junking it anyway. It is either going to unscrew from the pipe or the pipe will unscrew from the mixing valve, both will be OK
