    Light Switch Issues
I just installed a new light fixture in a starecase by taping into an existing wire that was already connected to an existing light switch. Now, when I turn on the lights that were already connected the new light goes off. When I reverse the switch it works backwards.

    Any help would be appreciated!

I am afraid you have "taped" into the switch leg of an existing light fixture. This will NOT work. You are going to have to find a constant, unswitched source for your new light. If you don't already have one, you can pick up a test light at most hardware/home improvement stores which will tell you when you have a good source.

    Good Luck

Morrow is correct, and sounds like you tapped into the 3 wire cable from/going to a 3 way switch?

If this new light could work at the same time a nearby light works, then you could run your cable to that existing light.

    Thanks for the help!

I have found a constant, unswitched source for my new light but now the light just stays on and does not work with the existing switch. Would the easiest thing to do be run a new switch for this new light or is there a way I can connect it to the existing switch?

Thanks again for all of the help!

If there is not another existing light that can be connected to so that the new light will work with at the same time, then a new switch needs to be installed.
