    I am being asked to co-sign for an apt for my 21 yr old who has never rented before.
    My 21 yr old daughter has asked me to co-sign for an apt for her to attend a trade school out of state. She has never rented before, and she doesn't have good credit. Her father has agreed to pay the rent (we're divorced). My husband is very gun shy about this issue. Any input would be helpful.

    If he has promised to pay the rent, he should be the one to co sign, not you, if he would not pay, then you will have to and if it is not paid on time, could go against your credit report as late payments.

    Also if there is damage beyond the depoisit you will have to pay for it if the child does not.

    As long as you understand, and have the ability to pay the rent if they don't pay it, then you know this going in

    Scratching my head on this one. If he's supposedly going to pay her rent on this apartment then WHY would she ask YOU to cosign for the lease? If you did cosign for this lease YOU would be responsible for the rent and not dad. I strongly suggest that you advise your daughter to get dad to cosign for the lease then he will be on the hook for the rent legally not just saying that he "agreed to pay the rent". Two completely different things here.

    If the wife said no then apparently she knows how the "game" is played and she doesn't want hubby getting legally stuck with the rest of the lease should the daughter decide to bail out early. That's why you were asked to cosign.

    Ask him to cosign or don't let daughter get her own apartment. Have her look for a roommate and have her move in on them instead.
