There are several ways a password can be entered. The initial security is a power or or BIOS password. This is set in the CMOS setup before the operating system is loaded. When you first power on (boot) you should see instructions to press some key (usually F10 or similar) to enter Setup. From there you can set the password, how depends on the BIOS in your machine. But the menu should make it clear.

If you want to set an Operating system password we need to know what OS you are using.

Is it an Apple? Or something else... most machines will be running some version of windows...

Linux machines are rare and I doubt you have one of those.

That's the brand of computer. Aren't you ever sitting at the computer when you press the power button? It tells you what OS you are using when the OS loads. Since it's a Dell you are probably using some version of Windows.

But you didn't answer what type of password you want.
