    Food safe wood sealer
Wooden bowl--I want to seal it to make it food safe to use as a serving bowl for salad and other foods.

I have a pretty antique wooden bowl. It has a mahogany stain on it. Do you know any type of sealer I can put on top of it to make the bowl food safe? I'd like to be able to use it as a salad bowl.

Just like seasoning wooden spoons or cutting boards. Wipe the bowl down with a thin layer of oil, trying to rub it into the wood. Let it sit in a warm dry place for day(like above the fridge or oven) then repeat. The oil soaks into the wood and seals it. And since your using cooking oil(olive, canola, etc) its food safe

    Hi, lplogan1!

I know that this question is somewhat dated now, but I'm concerned as to whether the bowl is actually intended to be used for food or not and already might have some kind of coating on it. Also, the specific kind of wood out of which it is made. It would be best to know about those things first.

You do mention that there is already a stain on it...

Not all bowls made of wood can assumed to be safe to put food in them that isn't sealed in some kind of packaging.

    Thanks!
