    This document might help you, obviously any large impoundment offers a considerable threat where large storm flows exist, however it appears that thus far this dam has assisted in flood mitigation but the flows far exceed its capacity. Considerable economic damage would be the probable result of braking the dam

    It may not be an "if "question as much as a "when" .

    It was never a great idea to build such a huge dam in a tropical rain forest.

    You see what's happening in Pakistan and in Nigeria., large dislocation of population as officials release water from dams to releave pressure from overfilled reservoirs . San Pedro Sula and Santa Barbara could be lost .

    Add to that the fact that El Chajon provides the bulk of the electricity for the nation and you can conclude it wouldn't be pretty.

    Already there were stop gap measures taken by the World Bank to fund temporary fixes to the dam .
