Flash drive with student progress information stolen from my desk . Am I in violation of hipaa?

HIPAA has to do with health information.

It is not likely you would be fired. Is this a private or public school? The student however could, and should, be in trouble.

Where were you when this happened ? Did you leave it unsecured in violation of school policy ?
