Can we watch employees for non profit
I work for a non profit and report directly to the president of the board. We are considering installing spy cameras to watch some employee areas. In these areas there is counselling and meetings that take place with members or the organization who are not employees. Can we legally decided to install cameras on on our own? In a religious non profit is there a level of expection of privacy for employees, self employeed clergy and members? Who needs to make this decision.

As for who needs to make the decision that would be a judge. The reason being is its illegal to "spy" on people.

If you want to monitor the premises with video cameras then your going to have to post signs etc informing people. There are also areas depending on your states laws where your not allowed to tape. Such as bathrooms or changing rooms. Check with your local laws before installing any equiptment no matter what such a company might tell you. Be diligent and have written plans.

    Hello b:

It really depends on WHY you want to install your "spy" cameras... If people are STEALING paper clips and you want to catch them, YOUR company has the right to do that. But, if there's ANOTHER reason, before I could tell you the ramifications/legality of doing it, I need to KNOW what those other reasons are.

Possibly, depending on what state you are in. But that assumes there are no signs alerting people to the fact that the cameras are there. If signs clearly alert people to the presence of the camera, there is no "expectation of privacy", and there should be no problem.

You can't put cameras in dressing rooms and bathrooms, no matter how many signs you post.
