I am trying to repair the j trap on a very old sink. The pipes and the bolts have corroded. Any way I can cut the pipe and fix a new one on to it, and would it be somewhat easy?

Any chance of a picture of the trap. A P trap has no bolts so I want to be sure we are both talking about the same drain. Replace Defective Sink Drain Plumbing - Pipe Disconnected And Leaking

It does not look like that. It is a metal pipe. It's probably around 80 years old. I just replaced the insides of the toilet and that was quite an ordeal as well. https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&i...disp=inline&zw

Scroll down half a page past the 2 white PVC traps, is it like this metal trap? The P Trap Buyers Guide Did you mention the toilet because it is related to this trap or was that just a passing comment?

Just a passing comment. I sent the picture over in the last comment. It is definitely a j trap.

OK but as you can see a P trap has no bolt. Were you talking about a nut like drain at the bottom of the trap? Even though its corroded you should still be able to unscrew it from the sink tail pipe which sticks straight down from the sink. Larger nutring can be backed off with a pipe wrench or spanner

They are nuts. I have tried to remove them but they will not budge. I'm wondering if there is a way to cut above the nut and some how replace it with pvc pipe. I think it would be much easier if it ever needed replacing again.

That nut can be hard to loosen. It is a slip nut coming down from above not up from the trap so your wrench is likely being turned the wrong direction. Picture if you were looking down on that drain pipoe coming out of the sink, looking down turn the wrench counterclockwise, it should break free. You can cut it with a hacksaw right above the nut and install a new PVC trap and slip nut.
