    Kenmore Washer issues
I have a Series 70 washer with an odd problem. The machine runs fine until it gets to the spin cycle. It will drain the water, but not spin on its own. If you catch it trying to drain, you can open the lid and close it and it will start spinning and resume it's cycle. I have heard possibly the lid switch or timer could be it, but was checking before I spend $100+ on a guess. Thanks!!

Sounds like a lid switch, they are no where near $100 so well worth trying.
You can unplug the old one and jump it with a short wire to see if spin works,
Just stick the wire in the holes of the plug, (out of the plug and back into it.)
(unplug the machine while you do this ) plug it back in and see if it spins
If it does, you need a lid switch

If there's 2 holes in the plug you can't go wrong but if there's 3 Don't do like I did last night and try all 3-the middle one sparked and tripped the house breaker-exciting.

Thanks, Kevin... I'll give that a shot. I hope that's it since I think I saw that part assembly for like 20 bucks!

I replaced the lid switch and it didn't fix the issue. Any other thoughts? By the way, that things a bear to get back together.

Your problem is with the timer. When it goes to a spin cycle, there is an automatic 7 second pause allowing the gearcase to ch. You are actually manually creating that pause when you open and close the lid. Timers are around 100.00, but not difficult to replace.

Try pushing the new lid switch down with something like a screwdriver, maybe the part on the door isn't pushing it down far enough. You didn't reverse the wires did you? It is annoying to replace the switch and you could have gotten them mixed up in the process.

Also, did you remember to re-plug the switch in under the console? I've forgotten to do that too-easy to check.

That's about all I can tell you except if it isn't any of the above it's starting to sound like a coupler problem or a transmission. Coupler is do-able, trans is not. Timer is least likely.

Any more problems you should try the appliance repair help sites, just search "appliance repair" there's lots of free ones.

The plug for the lid switch was shaped in a way that required it to be lined up correctly so I'm pretty certain that was done right. Also, I checked the switch and it is getting pushed down all the way and it is. I'm thinking I'll try checking/cleaning the contacts on the timer and see where that gets me.

Sound like the problem is in the timer.because the washer goes in to nuetral drain. It mean that it is draining without spinning the tub.The timer is what causing it pause and switch the tranny back in to spin cycle.
    Good luck.

Now I have one with the same problem-wasnt the lid switch or coupler-must be the timer like mentioned above. If you open the lid and close it you can hear the trans slam into gear and start spinning.

    Kevin,
Have you replaced the timer? If so has that solved your problem?
