Hello. Doing remodel of main and basement bathrooms. Upstairs just replace with new one ADA toilet. Old one (actualy 2 years only) decided put in basement b/room. Toilet from basement moved to trash station. Sure didn't check rough-in, thought both bathrooms have same. Just finished tiles on floor and walls in basement b/rm and find out that rough-in is 9-1/4". Any suggestion, tips on this situation - can I find something not to cut wall or floor?

Hi David...

You need to purchase a 10" rough in toilet for this job. It will be a tight fit at a 9.25" rough in, but it should work as toilet roughs usually leave about an inch between the finish wall and the back of the tank.

Most home supply stores won't carry 10" rough in toilets, but they can order them. 10" rough in toilets can also be ordered online or at a local plumbing supply store.

10" rough in toilets are more expensive than regular toilets, but with a rough in like you have you don't have alternatives!

Mark gave you excellent answer... I would like to just comment on design of such a toilet: If you look for nice design toilet than you will find it in TOTO line. Otherwise, all others look the same.

Closest rough-in is 10". You can use an offset flange but that is not the best way to go because they are prone to clog. One solution that I have used under similar circumstances is to cut the wall, remove a tiled section, make a small niche and set the toilet for a 12" rough in. If you are careful, you may be able to cut the wall out in 1 section, with the tile included and then glue the section back and tile the sides of the niche. Makes a "architectural detail" out of a mistake. Last one I did was an arched niche with shelves. Looks great. Hope this helps!

Thank u very much all for fast respond. You help me make decision - a/ will buy 10" rough-in toilet - found on similar forum they recommend TOTO(as u mentioned), model CST744EF.10; I check spec - it has 3/4"gap between tank and wall.
Cost $318, free shipping, maybe will got 10% off by coupon.
b/If it doesn't work - will cut rectangle of few tiles on wall and remove cement(it will give me about 1/2" or at least 3/8"), after I will prepare and paint wall, and put some tile bullnose alone rectangle.
Toilet will come in about 8-10 days. Will let u know how it will works.

Sorry for not quick reply. Had bad experience with FaucetDirect.com. Put order for my toilet from this site on 09/24/2010 and finally got the shipment on 11/18/2010. But it’s different story. Good info – this particular model really fit in place – 9-1/4” rough-in. Even more – it’s still 1/8” between bowl and wall and 3/8” between tank and wall. Thanks god – no additional work needed (wall cut or etc.).
Just remind for you: I bought TOTO ECO DRAKE Model CST744EF.10-01(or in some places CST744EF.10#01). Hope this info will helpful for someone with same kind of problem.
