Ownership of a car if brought with a joint loan
My ex partner and I took out a car loan in joint names. The car documents stated my partner as owner. On the insurance I was named as the other named driver. Now he has gone he claims I have no ownership on the car although the car loan was in joint names. He pays for the car monthly but paid me reduced rent as part payment of my share of the car. Do I have any ownership rights? My concern is he will leave his job and I will have to pay for a car I do not own. I have spoken to the bank and they claim he has to apply for a new loan in his name only to transfer the loan to his name only which he will not do, although I have requested him to do this many times.

If your name is not on the car title, you do not have any ownership of the car.

Merely being listed on the loan docs only means you will have to pay for the car if he does not pay.

Never be on a loan if you are not on the title of a car.
