    ip address/net connection
I'm running XP Pro on a Dell desktop, connecting to the internet via an Apple Airport Express.

This has worked fine for a few months, however I recently changed some settings on the wireless network, and have been unable to connect to the internet since (either wirelessly, wired, or even directly connecting the PC to the (DSL) modem.

The problem seems to be with the IP address. When this is set as automatic, a 169.x address is assigned. The repair function fails, saying that the action 'Renewing your IP address' could not be completed.

On manual, I have used the settings from a laptop (that still connects fine) with a slightly different ip address (e.g. 10.0.1.5 instead of 10.0.1.2) but the same subnet mask, gateway and dns server. The connection is then listed as 'Connected' but I still cannot access the internet.

Things I have tried: Reinstalling network card drivers, reinstalling (upgrade, not full) windows, used wired instead of wireless and vice versa, connecting without wireless router completely, changing router settings.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried manually inserting the dns server settings?

If the machine is picking up a 169 IP address then its not communicating with the router.

NeedKarma: Could you be more specific?
    Thanks.
