If you're asking about a galvanized pressure tank, (see image) they both perform the same function. (see bladder tank function) The obvious advantage is size. If space is a problem bladder tanks take up much less of it. Another plus is that to recharge a pressure tank you have to shut the system down and drain the tank where with a bladder tank it recharges with a valve,Does this answer your question? Cheers, Tom

I am guessing that an "air volume control tank" is, as SB suggested, the old galvanized tanks. The tank has a valve about halfway up that keeps it from filling with air. Every time the pump kicks on, it puts a charge of air into the tank. There is much more to go wrong than the bladder tanks, which are pretty simple in function. One plus for the old tank is that they have less stress on the pump. When the pump cuts off, an air valve allows the wellpipe to drain, thus filling with air. So, when the pump cuts back on, it has no pressure on it. With a bladder tank, the pump has to cut on with considerable pressure on it.
