Is it OK to have a guinea pig when you are pregnant?
Hello, I am pregnant and my 5 year old has a guinea pig. I have heard that it is not good to have a guinea pig when you are pregnant. If you could help me out that would be great. I don't want to tell my 5 year old that she has to get rid of our pet. Thanks

I've never heard of any issues with guinea pigs while pregnant. Where did you hear this?

I know that cat litter (cleaning it out) while pregnant is dangerous, but guinea pigs, never heard anything along those lines.

Who cleans the cage? I think that may be the only issue, if there is one. If you're worried just get your husband to clean the guinea pig cage while you're pregnant. That would be the only possible thing that I could think of as a concern.

Congrats on the pregnancy, and I don't think you'll have to re-home your pet. :)

The potential infection you could obtain is different, but you would take the same precautions as you would if you had a cat during pregnancy.

*Let another adult clean the cage
*Wash your hands well if you handle the guinea pig
*Teach your daughter to wash her hands well after playing with her pet or touching any of its toys, bedding, etc..

You don't have to get rid of the pet, just error on the side of caution and be diligent with hygiene.

Guinea pigs are clean animals. Just let someone else clean the cage and you'll be fine.
