I posted a comment on a local blog about a school in our area that my husband attended. I basically said the school was a joke that didn't have their **** together and provided us with misleading information when my husband registered. All the information I posted was TRUE (what they promised; problems my husband had during the year, etc.) I also said they cared more about their paycheque than the students welfare. The school is now saying they may sue for slander. I know that slander is any information that is posted or discussed that is NOT true which was not the case here. Advice?

First, slander is the spoken word. Libel is the written word. So, can they sue you for libel? Yes, they can if they lost any business because of what you said.

Actually, if I understand what OP wrote, the statements she posted on her blog were true. Truth is a defense, meaning they cannot successfully sue. On the other hand, since she used the spelling "paycheque", I am guessing she is not in the U.S. in which case defamation law may possibly be slightly different.

Of course they can sue. Doesn't mean they will win if the truth prevails. ;)

You don't know that last statement to be true. It's your OPINION, and you said it like it was FACT. That's troublesome for you. If it were me, I'd offer to print a retraction, and HOPE that satisfies them. Do you own your home?? I'd guard it if I could.

I see issues with what you said.

They are a joke ( sort of hard for you to prove that type of comment)
They don't have their "****" together ( again how are you going to prove it)

And I mean with evidence that will be allowed in court, not opinion

And that they care more for their pay check than the students. Not sure that is really wrong if true, at the end of the day a private school has to make a profit. If they can't make a profit they will go out of business.

So you could post exactly how they treated your husband wrong, ( be sure you can prove it) for example if they told you one thing, you have proof that you were told this. Have it in writing what they did not do

They are just saying this. Not going to happen.

To sum up. A lot will depend on your exact wording and what you can prove. They may feel they can make a case. Or they may be trying to intimidate you.

I'd check with an attorney.
