    Filing for taxes after separation
My husband and I separated in Novemeber of this year and filed for divorce in November as well. We both have children from other marriages and we now have two different homes in two different cities. Can we file Head of Household on our taxes this year instead of married or married but separate? My accountant says yes, but I want to make sure we are doing the right thing. Thanks!

Yes, you can file for head of household only if you have dependent children living with you. In your case, you can file head of household. As for claiming exemptions, only one parent can claim each child. Remember, if you claim timmy, the father cannot claim timmy.

If each parent has a child living with him (even if they cannot claim the child's exemption), that parent can claim Head of Household.
