My mower started to run rough, slowing and surging like it was out of gas. It stopped after that and when I crank it, it turns, but there's no sound like there is fuel going in or combustion happening.

There is gas and I checked the fuel filter, which has strong flow. I'm wondering what I should check next?

OK, I pulled the spark plug (finally found a socket), and it's fairly dark. If I crank with it attached, no spark, so I'm off to try a new spark plug to see if that fixes things.
