Average speed of a car traveling 40 km/h one way and 60 km/h on return
A car travels along a road at average speed of 40 km/h, and returns along the same road at an average speed of 60 km/h. What is the average speed for the total trip?

How long does it take to go X km at 40 kph?
How long does it take to go X km at 60 kph?
What is the formula for determining speed?
    You got it!

    average speed of a car travels = 40 km/h
average speed of a car travels (return)= 60km/h
    total average speed of a car = 40+60/2= 50km/h

We are both correct. Lets say trip covers 240 km. At 40 km/hr it takes 6 hours to get there and, at 60 km/hr, 4 hours to return.
    Total time: 10 hours. Total distance 480 km. Average speed= 480km /10 hr = 48 km/hr.
You have calculated the speed average velocity, I have the distance average velocity. (Or is it the time average velocity?)
And we think averages are cut and dried!
