Pilot light goes out randomly
My pilot light keeps going out on my Carrier 58GP100BA furnace. It's about 10-12 years old. Last year I had the furnace tech out to clean and check my furnace before winter. He cleaned everything, replaced the thermocouple and everything seemed to be working okay. For the next 2-3 weeks the pilot light would go out just whenever it felt like it. I called the tech back and they spent a total of 4 hours looking for a problem, even went on the roof. They ended up cleaning and adjusting the pilot assembly. This was in November of last year. The pilot pretty much stayed lit after that except for a couple of times. This year I started my furnace up around Halloween. I had to light the pilot 11 times between Halloween and Thanksgiving. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the furnace worked just fine, absolutely no problems. On December 22nd the pilot was out again. I had to light it 8 times in a liitle over 24 hours. Since the 24th of December it has been okay again. The furnace seems to think everything is fine because it runs normally when the pilot is out. The blower comes on, everything runs for a while and it shuts off. I only notice it when it starts to get cold in the house or I check the vents and there is cold air blowing out. What do you think can be the problem. I don't want to call the tech out again to spend another $130.00 to just watch him scratch his head! Thank you for any help you can give me.
Thanks for the feedback! The thermocoupler was changed last November 2005. I'm now wondering if that new thermocoupler was defective. Can a thermocoupler randomly not work? As far as the weather being a factor, it doesn't seem to be. We've tried to connect the two, but can't.
