    Hello j:

    If it was on your property, at the very least, they TRESPASSED. If they STOLE the tree, that's another charge. You didn't say Call the cops. Then you can sue them for the value of the tree they cut down.

    A neighbor is permitted to trim limbs that extend over the property line. But they cannot trim beyond that. They definitely cannot enter your property and cut down the tree. Also, if they trim too much as to cause damage to the tree, then they are responsible.

    So what actually happened and what do you want to do about it?

    First, please don't use the comments feature for follow-up. Use the Answer this Question options instead.

    I asked what is it you want to do? Was the tree materially damaged. Were here the cut off limbs providing shade or privacy that no longer exists?
