Count the rings... or ask the person that planted it.

I imagine this only works once you cut down the tree - but is there a way to tell the age when the tree is still alive?

You still do it that way. I.E. count the rings. Ever hear of taking a core sample? Works for trees just like ice, rock, etc. Concept is the same... size of the core is all that changes.
