The 18-year-old is a legal adult - no adoption is necessary.

Is there a reason you want him to adopt your children? It seems he's been a part of their life for 14 years already; why is adoption necessary?

Are the girls aware that your husband is not their biological father?

Yes, he can. Getting the bio-father's consent dispensed with complicates things somewhat, but normally can be done.

    Several reasons seem obvious:
    • They get his last name
    • He would be legally their father, for inheritance (assuming he doesn't make a will) purposes, legal paperwork, etc.
    • (as far as the minor child is concerned), he would have rights to make decisions (medical care, etc.),
    • f they are at all bothered by the stigma of illegitimacy, that would be ended.
