What Is Wrong with My Dog?
Have been to the vet twice this week. Great team they have. 12 yr. old black lab. Had blood work done. Most ranges were all normal. Possible early Liver cancer. She was full of water and had bad diarrhea. Took meds for that. Urine is dribbling out of her now. I will call vet tomorrow. I was just curious if pain med tramadol could attribute to this? Thank you, liz

Hi I am touched by your situation as our furry friends are so cherished! I want to share my story with you regarding an illness that broke my heart. Five years ago, my 10 year old Male lab seemed to struggle when urinating... at first, I thought it was a bladder infection of some sort? Easy right? Otherwise healthy & happy, I simply figured Antibiotics and problem solved. However, I was soon to be in shock as I found out he had Prostate Cancer with very little hope. I extended myself beyond my means and before I had a chance to see if the chemo would help at all, the enlarged tumor put pressure on his urethra causing a blockage. I lost my beloved friend in 3 devastating weeks. Specialist later confirmed that if he had proper prostate screening after age 5, it may have given us a little more time.

Another story to share... a friend of mine had a 11 year old with Lung Cancer, they took out 20% of his lungs and is still alive & thriving two years later! I suppose if an illness can have a happy ending, this was it!

Animals seem to get everything we as humans do & I wanted to share those stories because if your Physicians are finding any sort of Cancer as the preliminary diagnosis... all I can say is act fast! The sooner the better regardless if it is one of our beloved furry friends or a loved one.

Additionally, it may be a good idea to get a 2nd opinion and be sure you have a specialist on your team... at the very minimum, an Internist specializing in Internal medicine. Personally, I feel better with a 2nd opinion and have also utilized resources from one of the Vet web sites that have Dr's available to answer & help screen your concerns.

I am hopeful that your Dogs situation will be met with a positive outcome... You are catching it early on but I know any illness can be very emotional and heart-wrenching to go through. I will keep you in my prayers... be strong.

It's possible it could be cancer and I am so sorry if it is, but maybe it is something less serious. Ask the vet to try all the options, tests, x-rays, etc to try to find out what it is. I hope your dog is all right. If your dog is having urinating problems you should definitely have your vet try to find out why. Where was she filled up with water? If it is serious, you could always try a different, more advanced vet maybe. Good luck.

Tramadol shouldn't cause urine dribbling, it's simply a pain medication. Was she put on a steroid for whatever reason?

I'd suggest going back and getting x-rays or an ultrasound done, and get a urinalysis done as well.
