Any idea what this story is called?
My Philosophy teacher was telling the class about a story he had heard a long time ago and he's been searching for the title ever since.

It's about a town of people who's children were starting to be born with no arms or legs, so they would kill these children. Until one day someone couldn't kill that child and decided to let it live. Eventually, more and more people started to let these children live and sent them off somewhere to live as a colony by themselves. Then whenever they started having children they would be born normal and these people with no arms and legs started killing the normal babies.

It's kind of a Morbid story, and I think it's a short story not a book, but If any of you could tell me I'm sure my professor would be quite happy. :)

    Thanks a bunch!

Your philosophy teacher told you about this story? Was it part of a class project or something? I can't imagine philosophy being part of anything like this story.

I love horror stories but this goes beyond anything I have ever read in that genre, ohso.

I think you had better drop out of that class. That teacher is a little far out there.

Yeah it was a gross story, but it kind of made sense. He was trying to make us think about why those people made those decisions, to kill or save the child, what makes right and wrong and stuff like that. I thought Lord of the Flies was pretty messed up for goodness sake. Piggy was Murdered by being pushed down a cliff and smashed with a rock. And I read that in ninth Grade as a part of required reading. I'm taking a college course.

    Hi ohsohappy,

From the information you have given it is difficult to say. The story could be an ethical dilemma presented as an example of cultural relativism. In other words, activities can only be understood in terms of what the culture regards as 'normal'. What is considered normal changes depending on circumstances. Fortunes of a cultural group can change overtime and perhaps this is what is being presented... Only a guess. More information is needed.

    Regards
