Oops, I forgot to screw it in!
COLUMBUS, Ohio — A camera mounted to a police helicopter in Ohio fell off mid-flight, striking at least three vehicles in a parking lot.

No one on the ground was hurt when the infrared camera valued at roughly $100,000 came crashing down around noon Wednesday in Columbus. One vehicle was heavily damaged.

At the time the chopper dropped its accidental bomb, the helicopter was being used in the search for a missing woman.

Police Sgt. Richard Weiner (WY'-nur) says the camera had been reinstalled on the chopper before it took off.

It's not clear why the camera came unhitched. Police are investigating, along with the Federal Aviation Administration.

    Sheesh! :o

Do you remember about 12 years ago when someone was bungie cord jumping and his instructor "forgot" to buckle him in? Apparently the harness was on but the fasteners were open.

    Sort of the same thing.

    How in the world...

I'm a former Federal employee so I can say this - probably the person who forgot to bolt the camera down didn't do it because it's not part of job description...

    Wow.

Thankfully no one was hurt from the camera falling off the helicopter.

My guess is that the guy that forgot to bolt the camera in good was a city or county employee... probably as bad as being a federal employee: If the government is involved, it's bound to be snafu (situation normal all fouled up).

Yeah. Like tom noted on another thread, the government can find enough eggheads to pore over all the regs and scour tax returns (and funding requests) for mistakes, but they can't get a guy to tighten a bolt on a $100,000 flying camera.

Only in good old Ohio. The folks up here are nice and all but they kind of forgot to take some brains when the brain train went by.

The government will spend a couple million doing a study on why the camera fell.

    I WENT BACK TO OHIO
    BUT MY CITY WAS GONE
    THERE WAS NO TRAIN STATION
    THERE WAS NO DOWNTOWN
    SOUTH HOWARD HAD DISAPPEARED
    ALL MY FAVORITE PLACES
MY CITY HAD BEEN PULLED DOWN
    REDUCED TO PARKING SPACES
A, O, WAY TO GO OHIO

WELL I WENT BACK TO OHIO
    BUT MY FAMILY WAS GONE
I STOOD ON THE BACK PORCH
    THERE WAS NOBODY HOME
    I WAS STUNNED AND AMAZED
    MY CHILDHOOD MEMORIES
    SLOWLY SWIRLED PAST
LIKE THE WIND THROUGH THE TREES
A, O, OH WAY TO GO OHIO

    I WENT BACK TO OHIO
    BUT MY PRETTY COUNTRYSIDE
HAD BEEN PAVED DOWN THE MIDDLE
BY A GOVERNMENT THAT HAD NO PRIDE
    THE FARMS OF OHIO
HAD BEEN REPLACED BY SHOPPING MALLS
    AND MUZAK FILLED THE AIR
    FROM SENECA TO CUYAHOGA FALLS
SAID, A, O, OH WAY TO GO OHIO
