You're right, it's 3
5-(9-(4+3))=5-(9-7)=5-2=3
Basically, as AEHelper has shown - you are solving for the innermost parentheses first and working your way out. So (4+3) goes first and so one. The parentheses are simply a way to organize the numbers.
