Hi,

I am trying to find a book for my brother that he loved as a kid. He said it was an old fantasy series of 5 books that he read in the 80s. He said all he can remember is that the book started with someone rescuing someone else from being hanged or burned, by saying they were magic and could black outthe sun... turns out it was an eclipse but it gave them time to get away. He said there were also bad guys called drakes, druids, drow, or drones. This is all that he remembers besides the fact that he loved the books, and I remember him always reading them, so I would love to find them for him. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's been some quite time since I read anything in that genre, but I suspect these were likely books published by TSR, and loosely related to the game Dungeons & Dragons. Your mention of "Drow" Elves strongly brings to mind the writings of R.A. Salvatore, a very popular and prolific author, pulished under the label "Forgotten Realms."
If the villians were called "Draconians" by any chance, check out the earlier work of Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, published under the label "Dragonlance", by the same publisher.
The mention of Druids could be the work of Terry Brooks, specifically the "Shannara" series.

I remember a scene in one of my faves where the sun rises in the middel of the arctic winter.. Maybe this is it. David Eddings is the author. I can't recall if it was in the Belgariad or Mallorean series though... Good luck.
