I just got a 8 week old border collie/golden retreaver and I have had her home now for 6hrs and I was told that they had her kennel trainned right along with her brothers and sisters and when I decided to go to bed I put her in her kennel and covered her and she started crying and barking and I couldn't listen to that I felt bad so now she is in bed with me and if my husband finds out he will ream me and new you know what.lol what do I do and how can I change this before it is to late?I used to have a border collie/black lab and he did the samething and once he was old enough and potty trainned he was sleeping with me and whoever else in the house.when I would kennel him he used to do the samething and I used to lay by him and put my hand in the kennel and in time he would stop.she is potty trainned in the time I had her she has only had one accident in the house which is good.

Picture you have 3 brothers and 3 sisters. You have lived with them and your mother your whole life and have never spent a night away from them.
Then all of a sudden a strange person comes along and adopts you. You miss your brothers and sisters terribly and can't understand why you have been taken away from them.

That's how your puppy feels.

It takes on average 2 months for a dog to completely settle into their new home so 6hrs is nothing.

Don't give in, leave pup in her crate, tell her no and put your hand in the crate if you wish, but whatever you do do not let her out while she is crying, all that is going to do is reinforce the bad behaviour.

When I first got my pup he was 3 months old and the first night he cried for quite a while. I moved his crate right next to my side of the bed so that he could see me, the crate replaced my nightstand.
He slept all night after that and every night thereafter.
Gradually over a few weeks I moved him further and further away from the bedside and now he happily sleeps in his crate on the opposite side of the room.

Same thing has happened me many times.
I have have pups of my own and am a breeder also,
Usually when selling a pup I give a piece of the material they have been sleeping on to bring to their new homes with them because they can get the scent of their brothers and sisters and mum. Your breeder obviously never did this. Not to worry there is another solution. You are obviously the one in the family he has become attached to. If you can give him a small piece of material you have been wearing he will get the scent and it will comfort him. If not try tomorrow to wear an old t-shirt for a few hours and give him it at bed time- works a treat .and as the previous person said Don't give in :D

Don't give the puppy what it wants. Giving him attention when he barks is like telling him to bark whenever he wants love. Keep him in the kennel at night and after a few days he should stop crying. Make sure he has plenty of food and water and even a bone or a to in his kennel to keep him occupied and everything will go well :)

During the day leave the kennel open, let him "play" in it, give him lots of praise when he goes in the kennel during the day. Try giving him a stuffed animal to cuddle with or a hot water bottle. Do not, I repeat do not, punish him to the kennel, you want his kennel to be his safe place and getting mad and throwing him in there will teach him the kennel
Is bad. My dog is never locked up but he still has his kennel set ip so he can sleep in it.

Food and water should not be left in the crate overnight. That is asking for a puppy to start howling because she needs to potty. Food should only be given at specific times so that you can make sure that she goes out to potty after eating. A good long potty break before bed should help keep ovenight accidents down.

Be careful of the type of toys you leave in the crate with the pup. You don't want to leave anything that will break off into pieces that could be swallowed and choke or cause blockages in the animals digestive tract.

Its been a few days and no follow up from the author of this thread. So, hopefully the problem has been resolved.

However, I'd like to give my opinion so that it will hopefully help others.

More than likely, when you got this dog, you played with him all day and did not teach the dog that you were the boss. Therefore, when you put him in the kennel, he objected by making noise. Why? Because he is your boss and how dare you put him anywhere without his permission.

The first thing you should have done with this dog before you brought him into the house is take him for a power walk. During that walk you do not let him use his nose or tinkle or anything but walk beside you paying attention to you. This will establish that you are the boss.

And this will make the dog feel comfortable anywhere that you put him. Including this strange new home.

The last thing you should have done before you put this dog in the kennel for the night is to take him for another power walk to tire him out and so that his bowel would move and you wouldn't have to worry about him pooping in the kennel at night.

Since you would have established that you were boss, the dog would not have objected to any place that you put him or left him.
