Ok My 15 year dtr brought home a beautiful chihuahua about a month in a half ago. I asked her if the dog was pregnant because her titts were so large, she said no and then called her Aunt that gave her the dog and said yes there is a possibility. Well I am an animal lover, but however I have 3 girls of my own and work full time and just do not have the time for a dog. The dog was being mistreated where she was at, so I can give her a better home than what she had, but I am worried about her in giving birth. She is so small. I have an appointment at the end of the week with my vet, but I am not sure if she is going to make it to then. She is nesting pretty intensely and when I come home from work all she wants is me to hold her and love her. She has no milk yet and it does not seem like she is going to get any. I am going to my vet but any ideas how to handle this if she does have pups and what if she has them while I am at work? Should I have a friend come and sit with her?

The dog knows more about what is going on than the Vet will on first examination. Set up a whelping box with washable bedding and a place for her to get up and go potty immediately adjacent. Make sure she has plenty of water. She'll do fine until you (all) see the Doc.

Aww poor girl. Just because she isn't producing milk now, doesn't mean she won't. Start feeding her a high quality puppy chow, and like Cats mentioned set her up with a whelping box. Do you know how old this dog is?

When will you be seeing the vet?

Unfortunately, she will not eat any hard food! I am giving her soft foods and some cooked chicken with no salts! She is getting big and the vet said she looks very healthy. Her milk is still not in, but he says it looks as if she is dropping and the milk should start to come in. I am still concerned that the pups will not make it, but we will see. I hope that it happens on a weekend while I am at home!! I know wishful thinking! When I get home she is on me until time for bed! She has to have all my attention and my 2 year old is not liking that! Thank you all for the advise!

Give her wet puppy food, she needs a lot of extra nutrients and colories at this time and if she won't eat dry then wet is fine as long as the packaging says for puppies.
You can also give her some puppy milk which is available at pet stores and even some supermarkets.

Feed several small meals a day, as the puppies grow that leaves less stomach room so eating big meals would be uncomfortable for her or she may not even want to eat.

Within 24 hours of whelping there is usually a temperature drop of a few degrees, get yourself a rectal thermometre and monitor her temp when you think the time is getting nearer.

Unfortunately Chihuahuas have a very high rate for needing c-sections so it would be a good idea to have your vets after hours number on hand in case you run into trouble.

Please have someone sit with her if you believe she is going to birth soon. Also take her to the Vet if u think she will deliever soon. You don't know the history of the dog she could have great difficulty delievering and even pass away. The pup could have been preganted by a dog to big for her to deliever savley. As you siad she was not treated so well and abused. Watch her carefully and good luck.
