I currently have a new home under construction in Beaumont and I've noticed that the builder has not put any drywall/cement board in-between the insulation/vapor barrier and the tubes or showers. Is there any code that I can hold the builders to?

This is how tub installations are done today.There is no reason to have the additional drywall behind a shower unit,it would serve no purpose.Actually it would cause problems for future renovations as it could cause mold/mildew,rot to the studs,etc.

When a bathroom is designed,the stud layout is for the rough opening of a surround.The rough-out does not have allowance for additional 1/2" drywall/hardi-board,etc.It is made to fit a 'general' sized, industry standard unit.

The unit is directly attached to the studs.

Is there a reason you might WANT drywall installed there?If so,you would have additional fees for the change order to the room(s) this would effect.

Code (to the best of my knowledge) doesn't require any drywall or board behind the shower units.Sorry.

As KBC stated very well there is no code that requires boarding behind a tub or shower.
